We conducted observations on 5 informal learning spaces in Carleton University: 2nd floor University Centre, 4th floor University Centre, 3rd floor Azrieli Theatre, Tunnel at Loeb Building, and Lounge at Loeb Building. While observing, we collected data on the environment, level of comfort, size of study group, and activities. We noticed some similarities and differences of students’ behavior at those locations.

Similarities

  • Most tables of 4 were occupied by 1 or 2 people.
  • Any empty table will be taken within 5 minutes (during observation time) (within 1 minute in University Centre).

Differences

  • Students in noisy areas didn’t talk a lot.
  • Students in quieter areas sometimes chatted in low voices.
  • In busy areas (2nd & 4th floor University Centre), most students were not studying.
  • In busy areas, students who intended to study usually sit in the corner.
  • About 1/3 of students have earphone/headphone on in University Centre.
