Based on the research results from previous phases, the
addressed problem is the diffculty of locating available
learning space and the ineffcient use of desk space on
Carleton University campus. A learning space booking
system was suggested as a design solution. The booking
system is consisted of a digital booking app and a physical
booking space including desks and seating. The furniture
will be placed in informal learning spaces on Carleton
University campus supporting active learning methods. In
this phase, 3 types of tests were performed by potential
users: task-based analysis about UI of the booking app,
co-design session about the desk structure, and anthropometric
evaluation about the board structure attached
to the desk. User testing results have shown potential
users’ preference towards simple UI and function of the
app, as well as a welcoming desk structure.

Three user tests were performed in this phase: a co-design
(C-D) test on the user interfaces of the phone app, a
co-design (C-D) test on the desk structure, and an
anthropometric evaluation (AE) test on the board sizing.
The tests were taken by 7 participants, and a pilot test
with peers was taken before each test. All user tests were
taken in 4th year industrial design studio or breakout
room in Canal Building. Both locations are informal
learning spaces, so participants could easily reference to
the environment where the desk would be set up.
