Obedience in Little Things

Last night, after dinner, I felt a prompting from the Lord to speak with my mother-in-law. She has been living with us. I did not respond to this prompt immediately. She normally hangs out in the living room after dinner. I was having a relaxing moment with Melody on the couch. After a few minutes, we decided to go upstairs and get the kids ready for bedtime.

I saw that my mother-in-law was not in the living room — she already moved on to her bedroom.

I felt guilty for not acting immediately on God’s prompting.

Just in case, I did knock on her door. I checked on her and asked her if she needed anything. She initially said she didn’t need anything, but then remembered that she needed help with calling someone. Malu sent her the contact number of an old friend. Not being very techie (she’s 80+ years old), she wasn’t sure how to actually contact this person. I sat with her and helped her make the call.

Whew! I felt better that I still said “yes” to the Lord even if I procrastinated.

At times, I would daydream that I would hear a message from the Lord commanding me to do something grand — something that would help many people. I recognize these are just immature musings from a private in God’s army. Maybe that will happen in the future. But in order for that to happen, I need to practice listening to him.

More importantly, I need to practice obeying him with the little things so I can have the strength to obey him with bigger things.
