Does liquid-immersion cooling make sense?

ASIC miners produce as much heat as they consume in terms of electricity. In reality, your electronics are nothing more than high-powered heating elements. They vent all of the power they use as heat to the outside world, usually through noisy and power-hungry fans.

CRAZY TIP: What if you use an ASIC as a room heater and save additional electricity for a heater to get a passive income? You’ll never know the good that may come when the heat is channeled for good!

Air is an excellent insulator but not a good conductor of heat.

Consider your jacket: It is filled with air, which traps your body heat within the jacket, shielding you from the cold outside. The down in the jacket aims to generate air gaps that keep the volume of insulating air between you and the outside environment constant.

TYPICAL AIR-COOLING

AIR cooling is inefficient, consuming 40 percent to 50 percent of total energy consumption. Fans and associated air-cooling and handlers utilize 30–40% of total energy. They alone use 5%–20% of the power required by the ASIC.

Air-cooling even though it is light on the pocket, takes quite a lot of space and severely limits the compute density of the facility.

More than one-third of the area in data centers and mines is dedicated to air cooling requirements such as Fans, filters, air conditioners, chillers, ductwork, compressors, and so on.

LIQUID COOLING

Immersion cooling

Due to their density, liquids are often efficient heat conductors. Unfortunately, while water is also one of the best heat transfer fluids, it has one major drawback when used for electronics cooling: it is very conductive to electricity!

To utilize water to cool electronics, you must invest a significant amount of time and money in designing systems, as well as preventative failure modes, to keep water and electronics apart.

Water also has a low boiling point and a high freezing point. To be successful, other chemicals must be added to water to prevent it from boiling or freezing, as well as to prevent the constant growth of organic debris in the system, which clogs the pipes and electronic parts of the miners.

Hence water cannot be used as a coolant, so a dielectric liquid is used for the cooling, hence making it more environment friendly.

Immersion cooling has several major benefits

Since there are no fans to blow out the heated air, the ASICs run more effectively than if they were air-cooled.

There is a significantly lesser risk of overheating, the ASICs can be overclocked more safely to boost hash rate.

Immersion cooling has the ability to increase the lifespan of hashing chips by cooling them.

While ASICs are generally fairly loud, when immersed, they become pretty much silent.
