Şehir Dedektifi (City Detective) is an urbanism initiative that focuses on children’s rights to the space. It gets inspiration from the creativity of children and plays with the principles of participatory design.

Objectives

  • To understand and deepen the unique relationship between space and children
  • To create new methodologies supporting children’s participation in the decision-making process
  • To adopt children’s fundamental spatial rights to disadvantaged areas
  • To produce publications, plays and design tools to help them experience the urban space
  • To meet children with the natural and cultural heritage of the city
  • To teach children the city as a common ground for all citizens and supporting their ability to develop sustainable solutions

Our Strategy

  • City Detective investigates!

All children have common rights, but the barriers differ according to the geography, social and economic dynamics of the field. For each field that we work on, we analyze these dynamics by using scientific methodologies of children development, urban planning, urban sociology, and urban economy. “Memory” is the keyword for our research process, we dig the memory of the spaces to identify advantages and disadvantages, then empower the hidden potentials. We have two creative projects born from our researches: Play depot: Video archive about play memory of the city and Urban Dictionary for Children: A lexicon to tell children their spatial rights.

  • City Detective gathers!

We believe that effective solutions for the children’s spatial rights be possible only with the inter-disciplinary engagement. We gather specialists, enthusiasts, and advocates via our online publication, city walks, and meetings.

  • City Detective plays!

Play is a fundamental right and also a great tool for participation. We create games for children to discuss spatial rights, problems, and solutions.
