You don’t need luck — you need habits.

Habits form your skills.

Your skills form your identity.

Your identity forms your success.

If you have a habit of eating junk food, one day you won’t be able to play with your kids. You’d be stuck bed-ridden — sick with diabetes — wishing you were healthy enough to live your life.

The thought is scary, isn’t it?

“But Arlo!” You might say, “That’s too far into the future! You only live once! I’ll be fine chasing pleasure…”

No you won’t.

Time flies by faster than you think. Before you know it, 6 months of a gaming addiction could lead to low grades in school.

What makes it worse is that habits are unconscious behaviors. You aren’t really aware that you’re doing them.

When was the last time you consciously brushed your teeth?

It’s automatic.

So use my words as an opportunity to rewire your habits.

You don’t need a complex plan.

You just need 4 habits:

1 That Keeps You Fit

Health is wealth.

You can always make more money, but you can’t get rid of the things you eat.

Whether you like it or not, you’re a human being. Humans live in bodies. If you want to live a long and happy life, you need to be healthy.

Focus on improving your health through exercise and nutrition.

I suggest trying a new sport that you actually enjoy.

A few months ago, my dad enrolled me in swimming class because “it’s a life skill”. The problem was… I hated it.

No matter how many times I attended class, I never practiced outside of it!

I didn’t like swimming as much as I loved basketball.

I could play basketball for 4 hours straight. Why? Because I loved it.

You might not have a sport you love yet, which is why you should experiment.

Invite your friend out to try a sport and see if you like it.

If you don’t, then try another one.

If you do, then keep going!

1 That Makes You Money

Another habit you could do is make your own income.

I’m not talking about your day job.

I’m talking about building a side hustle.

You can learn nearly any high-income skill online through YouTube.

Pick one that sounds interesting to you:

  • Copywriting
  • Video Editing
  • Sales

Learn the basics, teach what you know to build your brand, and sell your service.

Another example of course, is writing on Medium.

When you reach 100 followers, you can apply for the Medium partnership program.

The best part is you get to write about what you’re passionate about and make money from it.

Thanks to the internet, we’re privileged to make money out of our passions! You can build a business based on your personal interests, skills and expertise — just make sure to apply high-income skills such as marketing, personal branding and writing.

1 That Makes You Smarter

On to the next one… intelligence.

Sure, you can’t change your IQ, but you can get smarter.

The reason why you’d want to get smarter is because your life is a sum of decisions. Your choices affect your lifestyle such as who you end up maryring, where you live, what kind of car you get.

If you don’t know how to make better decisions, you will suffer from the consequences of your actions.

Back then, I didn’t read books. I’d make terrible decisions by being with the wrong friends, not taking care of my health and acting impulsively.

But in 2020, I started reading self improvement books.

I learned how to think logically, how to focus on what matters and how to build myself,

Lastly, pick a habit that will make you creative.

If your side hustle requires creativity, that’s great! You can do 2 habits at once.

If your business isn’t related to creativity, that’s fine!

This is your opportunity to dabble on your interests:

  • arts
  • music
  • writing
  • video creation

Try what excites you, not what is hot right now.

Naval, an entrepreneur and philosophical guy on Twitter, advises us to follow genuine curiosities instead of what’s trending.

Doing so, you build a more sustainable content creation business, and you stand out when building your personal brand.
