On a daily basis, we are always on our ways to another place, mostly through with our feet, or on a car. For cars, sometimes people are being careless or drive absent-minded. For example, driving and play with your phones, But do you know how dangerous this could be?

Driving while playing looking at your phone is very dangerous for other people and also harmful to you, your few seconds of distraction could potentially have a car crash.

Car accident rate

I sent out a survey to my friends, one of the questions are ”Do you feel the airplane is safer or the car”, more than half of them answered the car is safer. Many have not noticed but cars safety issue always is a problem, tens of thousands of people died in car crashes(more than 30,000 in 2015). Human error was cited most frequently as accidentally cause followed by environmental factor and vehicle factors. And car statistically has way higher accident rate than the airplane.

Driving under the influence (DUI), driving while impaired/driving while intoxicated (DWI), operating while intoxicated (OWI), etc. Although these are considered as committing a crime, they are not entirely eliminated. Self-driving cars could hypothetically reduce the number of people died in car crash dramatically.

Why self-driving cars?

Another question I asked in my survey is, “Do you agree with the automation of the cars?”, the responses are half and a half, some agrees and some rather drive themselves. But If the human error takes in responsibility for about 94% of the car accident( “Search Deep Blue”, 1979), Why don’t’ we use a new technology that could keep us safe, and eliminate that dreadful accident and car crashes? And also, to free our hands.

Autonomous cars, also know as self-driving cars. This car is a car with sensors that can sense its surroundings and environment, to navigate to your destination, and avoid any obstacles all automatically.

This is where self-driving coming to take place. Self-driving cars are smart, they do not cause the accident because of human errors. Self-driving they obey traffic laws, they make you to place you want to go, With real-time updated GPS system, they could even navigate around constructions and congested traffic lines.

The self-driving car, they are smart, they are high-tech, Self-driving is the wisdom that combined from many other fields, and they look promising, I am looking forward to seeing the benefits self-driving cars could potentially bring to us in the coming future.
