One of the things I enjoy the most in learning about self-driving cars is simply realizing how much resemblance a set of computing machines could bear to our human body. A part that stood out to me is perception, as it takes after many of the visual functionalities in our body anatomy. The concept of perception itself comes from the Latin word perceptio, which means ‘gathering’ or ‘receiving’ [1]. In large, perception can be defined as the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the presented information or environment.

How do we see the world?

We receive information through our senses, namely types of perception, including vision, sound, smell, touch, and taste. However, vision is our primary human sense.

According to a research by the National Institute of Health, we perceive close to 80% of all impressions by means of our sight.
