Narcissists manufacture your social isolation by skillfully manipulating groups of people into rejecting you.
The narcissist will spend weeks, months, or even years conducting a well-crafted smear campaign against the target. Many narcissists live a double life. What the narcissist tells a group of people in a social setting may be very different from what the narcissist tells the target in private.
Therefore, it is often in the narcissist’s best interest to keep the target and the group separated. Otherwise the target may ‘spill the beans’ and reveal the narcissist’s lies.
Another reason a narcissist may facilitate the target’s social isolation is due to the sadistic pleasure of seeing the target suffer. Many narcissists feel invigorated and powerful — also referred to as narcissistic supply — when they are able to control the actions and emotions of others.
The narcissist will often prime the target by dropping subtle indirect hints that the target is not liked by someone in the group. And when the narcissist feels that the smear campaign has solidified with the group, that is when the narcissist will deliver the words, “No one there likes you.”
