Every four years, we add a day to the calendar. We do this because it doesn’t take us exactly 365 days to make a full revolution around the sun.

And I know, it’s not an extra day. I wish we would just double up and have two Saturdays in a row. We could do it like daylight savings except instead of falling back 1 hour, you fall back 24.

The extra day got me thinking: what would it look like to spend an entire day on writing?

February 29 falls on a Saturday this year, so I think all of us writers should make the most of it.

Preparation

February 29 is a little over a month away, so we have some time. In order to spend all day writing, we need to know what we are going to write. You could try to write as many poems as you can. You could try to write several short stories. You could knock out a large portion of a novel. Whatever your goal is, you need to prepare for it.

If you want to write poems, you should start brainstorming topics so you can simply move to a new topic when you finish a poem. If you want to write short stories, simple outlines for the stories you want to write are essential. If you want to make significant progress on a…
