Advances in autonomous technologies seem to take place on a weekly basis. Still, many people suspect Level 5 autonomy is quite a few years away. Does seven to ten years until the technology is ready for consumer use sound reasonable? How about three years?

According to British companies Addison Lee and Oxbotica, three years is all it may take. These two companies have teamed up to develop a fleet of self driving taxis in a program called Driven. The aim is to deploy this fleet in congested cities like London to not only reduce the abundance of pollution, but also cut down on time spent in traffic.

Addison Lee is a company that manages a fleet of cars in London while Oxbotica focuses on the development of autonomous software. Both understand that in order to solve the question of self driving cars correctly, more partners need to join the project.

Given the complex and multifaceted nature of autonomous implementation, the Driven project utilizes the talents of other companies. When it comes to concerns over protecting autonomous cars from breaches in cybersecurity, Nominet offers its expertise. There are many questions surrounding how insurance will evolve around self driving cars. This is where XL Catlin steps in and works with the other partners on the Driven project. Telefonica offers a sound understanding of vehicle to vehicle communication that will ensure the safe and efficient performance of autonomous cars in the future.

The Driven project is unlike other endeavors you might read about. It is a conglomerate of technical partners that understand the important factors that go into creating successful fleets of autonomous cars.
