7 Iconic Austin Murals
As we drive around Austin, we’re reminded that our city is home to amazing artists who find great very public canvasses.
Here are seven of our favorite Austin Murals.
Texas, Guadalupe
Bold and bright mural outside Planet K at their Guadalupe location. The Alamo and Guadalupe River are featured in this brightly colored painting.
Austin, Guadalupe
On the front of the same Planet K is a wonderful Austin-themed mural almost hidden by the overgrown shrubs. In this mural, you’ll notice the prominence of the University of Texas Tower and Bevo. Fitting, given its close proximity to the UT campus. There are so many other great nods to Austin in this beautiful piece of artwork, including the can of Spam, in reference to an event that keeps Austin Weird, Spamarama.
“We Rise”, East Austin
Muralist, Chris Rogers is credited for this unique piece of art located at 12th and Chicon in East Austin. Entitled “We Rise” this mural features notable musicians and embraces change. A wonderful documentary, “Portraits Behind the Paint,” with insights into why this mural was repainted, is available on YouTube.
Lucy in Disguise, South Congress
Lucy in Disguise on South Congress Avenue is an iconic costume shop in Austin. The outside mural and statue atop the store are just invitations to explore the interior. So many costumes and accessories, it’s definitely someplace you’ll want to linger when walking the shops and eateries of South Congress Avenue.
Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, South Congress
Currently, on the side of More Home Slice Pizza, is the Mister Rogers mural. Stencil artist, Niz, was commissioned to paint the mural in 2014, and who doesn’t want to be his neighbor?
Willie for President, South Congress
The “Willie for President” mural is located on the south side of STAG Austin. Yes, in Austin we do love Willie! You can check out some photos of the creation of this mural on the STAG website.
“Greetings from Austin,” South 1st
Last, but not least, is the very iconic (and copyrighted) side mural on the Roadhouse Relics building. We were fortunate to find a time to shoot this photo when tourists weren’t crowding around for their selfies.
There’s little doubt that we have omitted someone’s favorite, pet mural. There are, after all, a lot around ATX. But, these are the six we think of most often when sharing our love of Austin.
