Many people overshadow the sport of soccer. Everyone thinks it is must a European thing and not that many people like to attend matches and play here in America and anywhere else around the world. But according to reports that span across the world, soccer is the most watched and played sport in the world. According to Bloomberg, “More than four out of 10 people consider themselves soccer fans, making the game the world’s most popular sport. In a Nielsen survey that spanned 18 global markets, 43 percent of people said they were “interested” or “very interested” in the sport in 2017.” The most interesting part of this article was it was written in 2017, and after any World Cup, the amount of people that are interested in soccer increases drastically. The World Cup was last played in 2018, so it would be interesting to see how many people are soccer fans now. During World Cup 2014, Statista stated, “ Nearly 700 million people watched at least 20 minutes of the game at home and more than a billion watched it at home or at a public place.” The main dispute for soccer not being a worldwide sport only comes from the critics about the sport in America. Many people state in America that soccer is not even widely played in America, but Forbes states, “As of May 2015, over 24.4 million people play soccer in the United States.” In 2017, Gallup reported that soccer was the third-most played team sport in the U.S., behind only basketball and American football. As the critics continue to undervalue the worth of soccer in the world, it is starting to become evident that the whole world watches soccer, and in the countries where it is not the most popular, it is growing rapidly.
