Building Company Culture in Virtual Reality

Work from home has been a “new cool” in corporate culture. I saw the workplace to be important in building the culture of any organization.

A place to connect, build trust, mentor, supervise, and now meet virtually. It is very difficult to keep going ahead with isolation in work, the inability to communicate with team members on an ad hoc basis can leave employees feeling soloed in their work, even if they are working on the same project or towards shared goals.

When companies suddenly moved to remote working, with no timeline when — or if — they’d be going back to the office, a likely casualty appeared to be corporate culture.

How could companies hope to maintain that intangible but powerful aspect of their businesses, predicated as it seemed on so many real-world things: colleagues meeting and socializing face to face, perks ranging from free coffee to onsite gyms, the design of the office environment itself?

Covid has changed the scenario of how companies would now react to virtual changes.

While many professionals today are juggling work with home-schooling arrangements and changes to childcare hours, in the longer term, it might leave some workers feeling enlightened by the benefits that ditching the daily commute could bring to their work-life balance.

According to reports, the productivity of employees have increased during WFH sessions since a lot of time is saved and put into extra working hours. But with increasing advantages, this virtual office session also faces the biggest challenge of employee engagement. It is a challenge for the companies to keep employees engaged and provide a sense of belongingness to them. With every employee working remotely, employee engagement activities like team lunches, corporate picnic etc have been a thing of past. Such activities kept employees motivates and fostered a sense of togetherness among the corporate family.

WFH culture has developed a sense of self-analysis in every employee since a person is responsible for how he/she is managing time, setting priorities, managing work, and home affairs together.

To prepare for this potential cultural shift on a large scale, companies should develop clear policies and invest in technology, and maintain training at all levels of the corporate hierarchy to ensure productivity and effective working practices. The restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic have quickly shifted the goalposts for companies that take their organizational culture seriously & set the tone. By adapting to change now, companies could not only deliver more positive working experiences today but also be better equipped for tomorrow’s future world of work.

Thus, living through COVID-19 can often feel messy and confusing: We all struggle to work out what we can or should do, and plan for a future that’s much more uncertain than usual. But for our relationships with work, most times the pandemic has been clarifying, reinforcing what people already know. What is most important for corporates right now is to make this situation fruitful for them and emerge victoriously!
