Work is an important part of everyone’s life that gets income and friends. It is where we spend a major part of the time and rely on to grow & stay contained in life. Hence good mental health at the workplace is vital.

Strong evidence proves that workplaces with high levels of mental wellbeing are more productive. The role of employers, co-employees is very important in maintaining a peaceful & happy work atmosphere.

In this blog, we will be discussing how important it is for the employer and the organization to consider an employee’s mental health at the workplace at times when we are faced with uncertainty or the fear of being infected in a pandemic.

Now, when we talk about the workplace, 2020 has changed the whole concept of the workplace — people are working from the comfort of their homes, pgs, or flats. What’s more surprising is that cases of clinical depression and stress have increased considerably during the whole work from home scenario.

The reasons here may not just be work-related stress but the overall situation that everyone is facing which includes

1. Trauma from pandemic

2. Grievances due to loss of life

3. Financial loss & insecurity

4. Loss of community

Majorly financial loss & insecurity have triggered depression in people since organizations are laying off people and many are losing their jobs due to the pandemic. The ones with jobs are under immense pressure to perform well so they don’t lose what they have.

Here are a few ways where a healthy workplace can be created by the employers even in WFH situation

  1. Communicate:

Just like how the organization communicates project guidelines & deadlines, communication with the employees in a casual way should be done to help them open up and discuss their problems or anything that bothers them in their professional lives.

2.Create Mental Awareness Program:

Many people struggle with mental health issues and are totally unaware of their sufferings. Organizations, on the other hand, should initiate mental awareness programs that can help their employees understand the importance of mental health.

3. Let them take a break:

Sometimes observations can go a long way. If the organization sees a sudden negative outcome from an employee and there is a sudden drop in their productivity, a break should be considered to help the employee gain an understanding of his/her situation.

4.Connect them to the right people:

With the rise in awareness about mental health, keep the employees updated about the contact numbers, emails & details of the various experts in the field of mental wellness. Keeping them informed about the right people will help the organization in the long run.

When we look into the statistics, according to WHO (World Health Organisation) it is estimated that over 264 million people suffer from depression with a certain amount of people suffering severe anxiety at their workplace. These statistics are high and cannot be overlooked.

What most organizations hire the staff they fail to understand that these people have a life outside work. Usually, such organizations fail to determine these factors while asserting the productivity of their employees.

Not getting enough sales? — — — The employee is lazy!

Not getting the project done on time? — — — — — — Fire them!

And so on

This cannot be pinpointed only to the employers but the majority of the time, mental health is taking back seat while assessing employee performance!
