Definition

Storage as a service(STaaS) is a cloud-based service that provides small-scale businesses or individuals as a business model wherein they can rent their storage infrastructure provided by the storage service providers. Small corporations and individuals frequently find this to be a suitable procedure for backing up their storage which contributes to lower infrastructure cost.

The substitute for storing the data records offsite is now the data controllers are fulfilling their backup storage requirements with help of SaaS providers including the service level agreements (SLA’s), colloquially it depends upon cost-per-data transmission and cost-per-gigabyte stored. It transfers the data required to be stored to service providers periodically via the SaaS provider’s cyberspace.

The service providers bring forth the required software to the client to retrieve data from the vault. It allows clients to perform conventional operations related to storage, like data transmissions and data backups.

What is a STaaS User for?

In scenarios where data transfers, superfluous data storage, and restoration of corrupted data is required Storage as a service (STaaS) can be seen as a potential solution. It can be used for the deployment of resources or for creating storage expanse for other on-premises storage. For instance, despite storing an extensive amount of data offsite, a data operator instead uses STaaS for providing data backup help. The user/client will sign a service agreement using which the provider will agree to offer storage space depending upon cost-per-gigabyte data stored and cost-per-data transmission basis. If the user’s/client’s data is lost/corrupted then, the data operator can request a StaaS provider for a copy of the data.

Advantages of STaaS

1. Cost — Data backup services are not always economical, largely when we talk about the cost of infrastructure involved. The process of manual routine backups is time-consuming. However, Storage as a service scales down the cost involved with conventional data storage mechanisms and offers suitable space in cloud storage for a lesser cost.

2. Intangible — Storage as a service is imperceptible, as there is no physical existence of it in its implementation. Thus, it exists virtually, and there is no need for physical space for it.

3. Reliability — In this service, data security is ensured both while transferring and storing, also it guarantees any unauthorized access to data.

4. Automation — To avoid the time-consuming process of backing up data, Storage as a service offers automatic data backup service.

5. Ease of Access — Storage as a service provides users with ease of access to data from any type of computing device.

6. Synchronous — Synchronization guarantees that all the data is automatically updated, covering all the devices. In this manner, the newest version of the data saved on one device will be available on the other as well.

7. Easy of Sharing — The storage as a service would grant the users to easily share data with just a few clicks.

8. Data Protection — Storage as a service ensures that data is well secured and protected from any data threats and breaches.

Therefore, Storage as a service is rapidly becoming the preferred alternative for all small-scale businesses as it allows storing the data remotely and it requires not much capital to set up the infrastructure. We also note it as an eminent means to reduce the risk of a data breach by offering robust and secure data storage service and improves business reliability.
