A Profession and an Approach

I’m borrowing from Mark Baskinger, you should read his full article in which he articulates his thoughts fully here. (I understand that he’s mainly addressing UX here, but the fundamental thesis that UX {or IxD} are buzzwords which cover a mindset that industrial designers have had for decades still stands, in my opinion)

Essentially there is a critical distinction : Interaction Design (a specific making profession) and the mindset of design-ING for interaction (an approach to making). An interaction designer is someone who designs the manner in which (for the most part) digital artifacts behave. Someone who designs for interactions, keeps the relationship between human and artifact central throughout their design process.
