Tohoku Local Food Cafe

Generally speaking, no matter where you are, it tends to be difficult to get to know the local food culture if you are living there as a foreign resident. But that’s such a tragedy for both sides — the international residents and the local food producers. Knowing the local food and food producers is the key to understanding and enjoying the place where you are living/visiting, while for the local producers, feedback from the international community is hugely beneficial for improving their products.
The Tohoku Local Food Cafe was born to bridge this gap in Sendai, connecting international residents and local food producers in monthly sessions. We started it off in January 2015, with Seri Nabe (Seri in a hot pot), an emerging food tradition in the Sendai area, and we invited Mr. Miura, the most famous producer of this Seri vegetable.
Typically, one TLFC session consists of about 45 minutes of lecture given by the producer and 1 hour and 15minutes of dinner, which features the theme food.

We are slowly but steadily developing this project. Due to the growing number of attendees, in April 2016, we moved the venue from Miya Cafe to Ceskoya, which is larger and can accommodate more people. We are also trying to integrate a tour into the session in order to provide an opportunity for even deeper experience with the local food culture.
All sessions are fully English-compatible and we are looking forward to your participation! If you’re interested, contact us through Sendai Motions or Find out about the latest sessions and news at
