J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” is known as one of the best pieces of fantasy fiction to ever be written. Originally published in the year 1937 by George Allen and Unwin, this 365 page masterpiece is just the beginning of popular series “The Lord of the Rings” that has had its praises for years and years. The author, Mr. J.R.R. Tolkien, wrote this magnificent piece of work for the reading pleasure of his own children, who also had a big part in the completion of the book. “When it was first published in 1937, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit was an immediate success” (Sullivan). With the accomplishment of writing a piece of literature that would impact the life of millions, Tolkien began a series of books that would carry out the adventures of Middle Earth.

The Hobbit” begins in the small home of Bilbo Baggins. Like most hobbits, other than being short, hairy and fat, Bilbo believes that adventures were a waste of time and all around dangerous, so he believed that living in solidarity and safety was the correct way to live. Then on one faithful, Gandalf the Grey, one of the most powerful wizards in the land showed up on his door step. Bilbo stood there looking at the wizard.

“Good Morning! He said at last. “We don’t want any adventures here, thank you! You might try over The Hill or across The Water.” By this he meant the conversation was at an end (Tolkien).

Not knowing what he was doing at his humble abode, Bilbo showed nothing but kindness to Gandalf, as all Hobbits do. Little did he know that his kindness would lead to him a grand adventure that he never had any intentions of taking, with serene landscapes, a dragon and of course the treasure at the end of the long treacherous journey. Working in perfect unison, the adventures set out on their long treacherous journey, that would change Bilbo’s life forever.

In the end, The Hobbit stood out to be a very entertaining read. While keeping me on the edge of my seat for the whole ride, it did not fail to me laugh/smile which kept me wanting more. For those who enjoy fantasy and adventure, The Hobbit is a quirky piece of text that anyone with a love for daring characters, and a beautifully executed ending. This book will forever be incarcerated in the hearts of all that have read it, or for those who’ve watched it. While the movie shows many similarities to the book, you can always assume that the book will always be better than the movie.
