Personal Mission Statement and Professional Goals Statement
Senior Projects, Fall 2018
Now that you have completed the How About You? worksheet, use this information to develop two formal statements that you will wear/display prominently throughout the term as a reminder of who you are and what you want to accomplish.
Personal Mission Statement
Your personal mission statement is the short and sweet version of who you strive to be and what you strive to achieve. It should be only one sentence in length, at most. It can even be a series of words, or a phrase (like a tagline).
Some tips I’ve pulled from other mission statement articles/advice:
Choose 3 Cornerstone Words
Everyone has a gift to offer the world — not emphasizing and communicating that gift to others puts you in disservice of your community. You may be the best person for the job, but if an employer can’t find you and understand what you offer, they’ll choose someone else. Choosing your three cornerstone words will help you clarify how you see yourself and how you want others to see you, and it is an important part of creating your mission statement as well.
To help focus your thinking, consider these questions:
What are your core values?
How do you want to be remembered?
How do you define success?
What do you want people to associate you with?
When crafting and communicating your personal mission, focus on these best practices:
- Simple and clear: Your mission statement should be easy to understand.
- Honest and authentic: It should reflect what you do and the change it seeks to make. It should be reflected in your everyday actions. Don’t forget about others. Yes, this is a personal mission statement, but it should be just as much about the people you want to impact as it is about yourself. Make sure that shows.
- Obvious: Put your mission statement where you can see it to act as a reminder of the Why behind your daily work.
- Bold: Your mission statement is an opportunity to demonstrate your personality and culture.
Once you’ve written your personal mission statement: turn it into a pin and where it on your jacket or backpack, or design it as a sticker and put it on your notebook or laptop. Take a picture of it and post it in Medium!
Professional Goals Statement
Write a clear, concise 150-word Professional Goals Statement that very specifically describes your professional aspirations upon graduation. Post your final goals statement to your Medium process, make it the background screen on your computer, and print and hang it where you will see it everyday!
