Today was another blood test. I have them regularly and they have always been bulk-billed to Medicare. In other words, I pay nothing. This morning, my phlebotomist informed me that I would be $80 out of pocket for this particular test.

I was shocked. “Really? But these tests were ordered by my specialist.”

“That doesn’t make a difference.”

Okay. After my experience two days ago, where I saved $300 by ringing around to find an MRI specialist that bulk-billed, I thought I’d check out the other pathology labs just a few steps away.

“If you don’t ask, you don’t get.”

This is my philosophy when I’m travelling but it applies to life in general.

I walked into the first lab, handed in the form and asked was there a gap I’d have to pay.

“No, we bulk-bill,” was the receptionist’s reply.

That was easier than I thought and saved me $80.

To save $300 on an MRI took me an hour on the phone, calling clinics all over the city. I needed the MRI results back to my rheumatologist by tomorrow. So the clinic at Caboolture Hospital which I’ve attended in the past for my knee MRIs has a 6-week waiting list! They…
