So Much Clothes, So Little Time

Are we really saving money at sales?

Last week I lugged two bags of clothes to the thrift shop. They were the final remnants of a massive shopping spree I went on back in 2018.

I don’t often buy clothes, shoes, bags or accessories. But one day I walked past this store, a well-known indie designer boutique that was closing down, and there were huge SALE signs everywhere.

Everything was going at 80-90% discount, or even more — there was a bin stuffed to the brim with clothes and bags with a sign “Take any 2 items if you like”.

Well, I DID like!

Over the next few days I bought enough stuff to outfit a pop singer’s world tour. With each passing day, the shop proprietor got more motivated to get rid of everything and she started listing crazy prices, like $5 shirts and $10 dresses.

It was insanity. I bought things that I would normally never wear (like a fluffy bright pink cropped sweater — why oh why?), items that didn’t fit me right but “I’m sure I can get them altered” and what seemed to be seven nearly-identical black skirts.

I bought over 50 pieces of clothing, three bags and two pairs of shoes.

So, what’s happened since 2018?
