IOT2TANGLE (I2T) is organizing an IoT-Hackathon from October 26th until November 26th 2020, together with high-profile IoT organizations Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions, STMicroelectronics, Espressif, Senseering, Vass Company, IOT ONE Academy, and the IOTA Foundation.

The goal is to generate high quality, real-world, open-source integrations between popular IoT Devices and the IOTA Protocol. Open-source IoT developers are invited to show their IoT skills in the field of Smart Cities, Smart Agriculture, Supply Chain Tracking, E-Health, and Environmental Control, or areas of their own interest. The prize pool consists of $4,500 in cash and a number of IoT devices for the Top 5 integrations. The Top 10 is going to be included in the I2T Hub on GitHub and will be made available to the open-source community.

The integrations from this hackathon will be valuable stepping-stones for subsequent development projects that connect IoT devices with Distributed Ledger Technologies.

  • International open-source IoT Hackathon
  • Focus on real-world usability and easy implementation for users
  • Sponsored and supported by large, global IoT organizations

Contest rules for “Integrate Everything with IOTA” hackathon

Projects will be evaluated regarding the real-world problems they solve, the hardware they use, and how well documented the step by step instructions are, so that others can easily implement them. All integrations must be submitted as open-source under the Apache 2.0 License. The integrations between IoT Devices and the IOTA Protocol must use the IOTA Streams Framework. Participants can use the I2T Streams Gateway as provided, or modify it and add new connectivity features that have not yet been provided by I2T (e.g. BLE, LPWAN). Projects adding new features or improving existing connectivity features to the Streams Gateway will earn bonus points. Projects that do not integrate with the IOTA Protocol or submit trivial applications will not be considered. The jury consists of representatives nominated by many of the sponsoring organizations:

  • Daniel Trauth (CEO Senseering)
  • Holger Köther (Director of Partnerships IF)
  • Jose Samuel Beriguete Valero (Director Delivery Cross VASS Company)

Why use Distributed Ledger Technology for IoT?

Decentralized protocols are deemed essential for the IoT to securely scale to tens of billions of devices globally in the next decade. Without a central service or server as a bottleneck, DLTs can provide data provenance, secure updates, and immutable audit trails from the edge. Waiting until data reaches the cloud introduces many security risks, including data theft, manipulation and single points of failure.

About IOT2TANGLE

IOT2TANGLE is a Hub for open-source integrations between IoT devices and the IOTA Protocol. It provides FOSS codebases to integrate different IoT devices with the IOTA Tangle through IOTA Streams in an easy fashion.

About IOTA

The IOTA Foundation is a global non-profit foundation supporting the research and development of new distributed ledger technologies (DLT), including the IOTA Tangle and IOTA Streams. The IOTA Tangle solves the fundamental shortcomings of blockchain: scalability, environmental sustainability and cost. IOTA is an open-source protocol connecting the human economy with the machine economy by facilitating novel Machine-to-Machine (M2M) interactions, including secure data transfer and feeless micropayments.
