James and I were recently in Amsterdam for a few days as part of a larger European trip. Even though we only had a short time scheduled to be there, we wanted to take advantage of the fact that sex work is legal in the Netherlands. Before we even left the US, we made arrangements to have dates with sex workers on both of the nights that we would be in Amsterdam — the first night with a woman and the second night with a man.

These were arranged through two different agencies because as we came to find out, sex work in the Netherlands is overwhelmingly geared towards men who want to meet with women. The agency we contacted about a woman did not offer dates with men, but it was local and 100% legal. The agency that we contacted about a date with a man was not really legal because they offered gentlemen from throughout Europe. For example, in the UK, sex work is legal, but this sort of pandering is not. Escorting (money for time) is legal, but kind of in the same shadow way that it is in the US. That was a red flag that we really should have paid more attention to in this instance. More about that in a minute.
