During his presentation Athul, one of the masterminds behind the Uppsala Security’s Threat Intelligence products, services and investigations, focused on the Money Laundering Techniques Employed by Malicious Actors. Based on researched data using Uppsala Security’s products such as the Crypto Analysis Transaction Visualization (CATV) or the upcoming Crypto Asset Monitor Solution (CAMS), various illustrations displaying money flow behaviors by threat actors as well as simple traders were shown to the on-site participants, in order to emphasize the differences between their conduct and set the base for Outlier cases.

Key takeaways from the shared research were the fact that the forwarding or the splitting of funds remains one of the most used techniques by malicious actors while exchanges are not only used for encashing/ swapping coins, but also to launder illicit funds — which also means that exchanges can make a significant difference in unravelling threat actor activity.
