Have an idea to start a blog? Well it’s not that difficult. Here, your 1st step is to do in-depth market analysis in order to understand which CMS to choose, why it is the best option for your niche and how much time you can save by using the CMS in your blogging project.

As the top 3 widespread CMSs are WordPress, Drupal and Joomla I will cover only those 3 platforms. If you have a request for any other technology stack analysis, feel free to send me an email at sona@seona.co.uk.

Drupal VS WordPress

A WordPress blog won’t require any coding skills from you, but you will definitely need to have some knowledge for starting a blog on Drupal. According to my analysis, WordPress usage is growing faster than any other platform. As you can see in the screenshot below, WordPress wins over Drupal by market share, website categories, and geography.

As WordPress is the leader in the market, I have created a report on the unique top-level domains that are using WP, their average monthly traffic, categories, correlated technologies and geography. Here are the results:

Website Categories Built With WordPress

According to Sept 28, 2016, there are 20,455,315 websites built with WordPress, 500K of which have been included in my report. From those 500K websites using WP, leading categories are:

  • Business and Industry — 8.8%
  • Arts and Entertainment — 4.9%
  • News and Media — 3.9%
  • People and Society — 3.6%

Monthly Visits & Correlated Technologies

374,014 websites that are built with WordPress are generating an average monthly traffic of 10K-100K. This means that WordPress is a pretty SEO-friendly platform.

The correlated techs data shows the percentage of other technologies which are being used the most in parallel with running a website with WordPress.

Geographical Coverage

Websites built with WP are widely used in US (33%), Japan (8%), Russia (5%), as well as GB, BR and IN for 4.6%, 4.2%, and 3.3% receptively.

Website Categories Built With Drupal

Leading categories of websites using Drupal are Business and Industry (18.8%), Marketing and Ad (5.5%). The Shopping category (3%) is more popular on websites built with Drupal than those using WP.

Monthly Visits & Correlated Technologies

458,407 websites built with Drupal (which is the majority of 500K websites included in my report) receive monthly traffic of up to 10K. This shows again that WP wins over Drupal in the SEO-friendliness battle. If you’ve chosen to go with Drupal, you should have at least some basic HTML and PHP knowledge, because the range of plugins and technologies you might want to use is usually limited with Drupal.

Geographical Coverage of Drupal

The leading country using Drupal is US (11.2%), followed by Russia (7.3%).

Joomla VS WordPress

Joomla and WordPress. When comparing these two platforms, it becomes obvious that Joomla is far from being a serious competitor to WordPress. Moreover, it will come second even in the Joomla vs Drupal race.

Coming back to Joomla vs WP comparison, WordPress wins again by market share, website categories, and geographical coverage.

Website Categories Built With Joomla

Compared to WordPress, 19.6% of websites using Joomla are in Business and Industry categories, the rest of the categories follow. This number is based on data coming from 142,838 websites built with Joomla.

Monthly Visits & Correlated Technologies

And here’s a good point showing that Joomla is not SEO-friendly. According to the screenshot below, the majority of websites (133,852) using Joomla receive an average monthly traffic of only 10K. The range of plugins you can integrate with Joomla are not too diverse.

Geographical Coverage

Geographical overview shows that Joomla is very widely used in Russia (9.2%), followed by DE (5.2%), US (5%) and other countries.

Creating a blog is not that difficult when you have a user-friendly CMS interface and you can handle the entire work without hiring a developer. Hope these analysis will help you choose the right platform for your blogging needs. All analysis are done by using SimilarTech Pro tool where data is updated twice a week.
