Can’t Kick This Habit
SCENE 50
INTERIOR CHEAP HOTEL SHIRLEY’S ROOM THE SAME DAY
SHIRLEY is in the room. A cheap suitcase is on the floor. She unlocks the dresser drawer and takes out the cigar box she had at the bus station. She unties the ribbon and quickly checks the contents. Satisfied, she ties it up again.
She is startled by a noise and drops the box on the floor and kicks it under the dresser.
The SERGEANT enters.
O’REILLY:
Thought I’d find you here. A rat always returns to its hole.
He sees the suitcase.
O’REILLY: (CONT’D)
Trying to do a bunk, huh? Well, we’ll see about that.
He pulls out a pair of handcuffs and grabs SHIRLEY roughly. She tries to put up a fight, but he quickly overpowers her. He snaps the cuffs on her, her hands in front of her.
O’REILLY: (CONT’D)
You’re goin’ back to jail.
He grabs her and deftly handcuffs her to the bedpost.
O’REILLY: (CONT’D)
So, you thought you’d marry him. Maybe have a copula kids? You always liked suckers, didn’t ya? A real fall…
