Ronaldo and the golden ticket

This story is published by Latterly, a quarterly magazine covering social justice issues globally since 2014.

Ronaldo Luis is a teenager who likes to play soccer and wants to be a diplomat when he grows up. But he has a better chance of making the national team.

Luis is whip smart. That’s not his problem. It’s that kids who live in slums generally don’t get to be diplomats.

But as Luis told me when I met him in 2015, “Sometimes your luck changes.”

What a tragic thing to say, I thought at the time. His luck won’t change.
