Global Migration Policy & Politics

This series presents original research and analysis on migration issues around the world from students in USF’s MA in Migration Studies. In these essays students consider the ways migrant identities and experiences are framed and narrated, how national and international laws and policies respond to and shape the experiences of migrants — especially vulnerable migrants — in the US and abroad, and ask how we can politically and practically disentangle the intended and unintended consequences of policies that seek to limit migration.

Nancy Giesel asks what role international policy plays in constructing legal and social perceptions of refugees and asylum seekers. With a particular focus on the role played by UNHCR, she explores how shifts in language have contributed to an environment in which asylum seekers are seen as a threat and a burden.

Nik Evasco tackles the intersection of migration and climate change. Recognizing the complex ways these two issues are interrelated, Nik offers three possible ways the global community can respond, weighing the costs and benefits of each.
