Briefly On Fat City

John Huston’s late-era masterpiece Fat City is that most contradictory of audio-visual experiences.

It captures beautifully the ugliness of life.

The exacting eye of lenser Conrad Hall captured some unpleasant scenes throughout the cinematographer’s illustrious career, from the crimes of Perry Smith and “Dick” Hickock in Richard Brooks’ In Cold Blood, to the torture scenes of John Schlesinger’s Marathon Man, but none so downright troubling as the images at the centre of Fat City.
