a morbidly amusing
children’s rhyme
written by István Eörsi
translated by Joe Váradi
Two Englishmen atop a ladder
their demise could not be sadder
as the ladder starts to tip,
our fine fellows lose their grip.
Never shall these gentlemen
Be pieced back together again.
High and mighty stood two Scots
now they lie in mangled knots
underneath the toppled ladder
their fate’s gone from bad to badder.
Nary a surgeon to fix this blunder
and sew up what’s been torn asunder.
