How Now, Brown Cow

During the 18th century, “Brown Cow” referred to a barrel of beer. This saying meant to have another beer to keep up the pleasant interlude in the tavern.

Eat Crow

During a cease fire in the War of 1812, a soldier shot a crow and was forced to eat it as punishment.

Raining Cats and Dogs

In England, heavy rains would fill large potholes in the roads. Dogs and cats would run loose and fall into the holes, giving the appearance that it had rained cats and dogs.
