After a little less than four months, we’re sorry to announce that we’re bringing this experiment in a subscription-based version of Serious Eats to a close.

Why?

It’s not because we’re no longer interested in experimenting on a variety of platforms, or attracting new readers and contributors, as outlined in our original welcome post. And it’s not because we don’t recognize the value to some readers of experiencing our content in this format. Truthfully, the one and only reason we’ve chosen to shut down SE@M is a clear lack of resources with which to sustain it, let alone make it better. We’re a small team with limited capacity, which, unfortunately, means that we have to pick and choose where we focus our efforts.

What Will Happen to SE@M?

We will continue to publish new content on SE@M, including our weekly exclusives, through August 31, 2016. However, as of today, August 10, we will not be accepting new subscribers. If you don’t subscribe to SE@M, but follow us or occasionally visit us on Medium, you’ll notice that when you click on a story, the option to subscribe will no longer be available.

All existing content on SE@M will remain available to subscribers until September 10, 2016. After that date, all published Medium exclusives on SE@M will be unlocked and made public, while all other SE@M content will be archived.

What About My Money?

If you already subscribe to SE@M, your subscription will be marked as cancelled by Medium’s payment platform. However, your subscription will be grandfathered for a period of one month from the date of your final payment. That means you’ll continue to be able to access content on SE@M for one month from your last payment date.

Will There Ever Be Another SE@M?

It’s possible. We know that many of our readers still value the idea of getting Serious Eats recipes, cooking techniques, ingredient guides, and equipment reviews in this format, and we’d all love to find a way to provide that for them, on Medium or elsewhere. But for now, the constraints on our resources mean that we can’t meet our high standards for quality content on SE@M. If and when we’re able to do so, you’ll be hearing from us. Your experience of our content is paramount in our minds, and we won’t ever stop reassessing our practices and considering new approaches. With that in mind, though it still sounds like a cliché…

We Want to Hear From You

Now more than ever! If you were an SE@M subscriber, what was enjoyable about it, and what wasn’t? Was it worth the money? If not, what would make it worth the money? If you didn’t subscribe, why not? Respond to us here on Medium, get at us on Twitter or Facebook, or email us at medium@seriouseats.com.
