Scrum is all about value:

“a framework within which people can address complex adaptive problems, while productively and creatively delivering products of the highest possible value.” — SG

The Product Owner is responsible for maximizing this value.

Some people see the this following as an issue in relation to continuous delivery:

“The heart of Scrum is a Sprint, a time-box of one month or less during which a “Done”, useable, and potentially releasable product Increment is created.” — SG

But Scrum never says that you can’t deliver more often during the Sprint. Many people using Scrum don’t wait until the end of Sprint to deploy. Continuous Delivery is the norm for them, while using Scrum.

Modern Agile — Deliver Value Continuously

Modern Agile stipulates the importance of value and fast delivery:

“Anything that isn’t delivered isn’t helping anyone become more awesome or safe. In modern agile we ask ourselves, “How could valuable work be delivered faster?” Delivering value continuously requires us to divide larger amounts of value into smaller pieces that may be delivered safely now rather than later.” — ModernAgile.org

It’s a statement against feature factories and for faster time to market.

Applied to Scrum

Scrum is focusing on delivering the highest possible value. Here is another example:

“Based on that [what was done in the Sprint]and any changes to the Product Backlog during the Sprint, attendees collaborate on the next things that could be done to optimize value.” — SG

The concept of delivering continuously can be fitted within Scrum. There is no reason to wait for the end of the Sprint to deliver your increment. Here is an example of how it is applied in practice:

Bottom Line

Modern Agile’s principle “Deliver Value Continuously” and Scrum can go hand in hand. Scrum very much suited for this Modern Agile principle.
