Three things NOT to do as a new Scrum Master
Congratulations, you landed your first job as a Scrum Master! You’re looking forward to helping your Scrum Teams and organization on their journey to work with this popular framework.
You’ve packed your sticky notes (’cause that’s what Scrum Masters carry around, right?), you know the Scrum Guide by heart, and you’ve done the essential training. Good to go!
In this article, I share three things you should NOT do when starting out as a new Scrum Master.
1. Be the know-it-all
Yes, you’ve proven to understand the framework to some degree by obtaining a certificate (as that’s what most organizations request these days). This does not mean that you understand the practical approach of Scrum.
There is a whole lot more to it than that. I often see people are being sent to a PSM course, and are expected to be the expert after just two days. Being an effective Scrum Master does not come from two days of attendance at any kind of course.
In a previous article, I discussed why I think you should become the Scrum Police. Always keeping yourself within the boundaries that you’ve been taught, could just as well limit your Scrum Team from delivering value.
