Maximize the product value! That’s the Product Owner’s mission; yet, many fail to achieve this.

An interesting aspect is how companies understand the Product Owner role. I’ve been a Product Owner in seven different places; each of them had a different set of expectations. The vast differences among companies make it harder to thrive as a Product Owner; many mutations within the role separate us from our mission of maximizing the product value.

What is the Product Owner role?

The Product Owner role is like the Scrum definition. Simple to understand, difficult to master. The Scrum Guide clarifies what the Product Owner’s mission is, but assumes the execution may vary widely according to the organization’s situation. So, you’re on your own when it comes to implementation.

The Product Owner is responsible for maximizing the value of the product resulting from work of the Development Team. How this is done may vary widely across organizations, Scrum Teams, and individuals.
