Definition of ‘Product’:

“A product is a vehicle to deliver value. It has a clear boundary, known stakeholders, well-defined users or customers. A product could be a service, a physical product, or something more abstract.” — The Scrum Guide (emphasis added)

Definition of ‘Product Domain’:

“A Product Domain is the boundary of the product, known stakeholders, well-defined users or customers, the market and technical environment that the Product directly influences or is influenced by.”

The Product Domain is not defined in the Scrum Framework, it is a complementary activity for teams who are not all that knowledgeable about the ‘the world beyond the cave’.

Why is it valuable to explore and map the Product Domain?

“Boundaries define us. They define what is me and what is not me. A boundary shows me where I end and someone else begins, leading me to a sense of ownership. Knowing what I am to own and take responsibility for gives me freedom. Taking responsibility for my life opens up many different options. Boundaries help us keep the good in and the bad out. Setting boundaries inevitably involves taking responsibility for your choices.” — Henry Cloud
