A Short Discussion of Assisted Dying
A New Bill Comes Before Parliament Today
As I write this Kim Leadbeater is proposing on the floor of the House of Commons in the British Parliament a Private Member's Bill that would allow for terminally ill people to be helped end their lives in England with dignity and not as 40 have done already by being forced to travel abroad to the Dignitas Clinic in Switzerland to end their lives.
It will be discussed at length today and the vote will occur in November. This is a conscience bill; therefore, it is up to each MP to vote according to their conscience and not on any party lines. Political issues and interests are irrelevant here but the religious and humanitarian issues are at the very crux of this dilemma.
But for those who are terminally ill, their issue is the approaching death which they cannot prevent. They need our help to give them the power to decide when they will leave this mortal coil and how, and not be kept alive by the State because of outdated Judeo-Christian sanctions and beliefs. Being born has no religious restrictions so why should dying when terminally ill?
If another person helps them to terminate their life it is a serious criminal offence and will be prosecuted because that is at the moment the law of the land. Their only option is to join Dignitas and…
