With the advent of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon streaming, the number of high-quality and accessible lesbian movies has grown tremendously in recent years (though it’s still a relatively small number).

One of Chia and my favorite pastimes is finding new lesbian movies with happy endings to watch. But even if a lesbian movie completely misses the mark when it comes to the plot, cinematography, acting, and/or has a bad ending, we will never say no to watching an awesome lesbian couple being paired together. If we’re honest, the lesbian pairing in a movie is sometimes the only reason we watch the film.

So with that said, here’s a list of the hottest lesbian couples ever shipped together in a movie organized by movie categories. We won’t blame you if you end up watching their romantic/make-out scenes on repeat. 😉

Be sure to also check out our list of the hottest TV lesbianships of all time.

Feel Good Lesbian Rom Coms

1. Leyla and Tala from I Can’t Think Straight

This is a cute, lighthearted rom com with two gorgeous lead actresses. Everything about the lesbian relationship between Leyla and Tala was on fire. You won’t want to take your eyes off of them for a second.

As for the storyline, it’s about a London-based Jordanian, Tala, who prepares for her wedding with her Palestinian fiancé, when she encounters Leyla, a young British Indian woman who is dating Tala’s best friend, Ali. Tala is outgoing and Christian while Leyla is shy and Muslim so the two could not be more different from each other on the surface but their attraction to each other is immediate and the two begin to develop deep romantic feelings for one another.

2. Lucy and Amy from D.E.B.S.

Debs has one of the hottest lesbian kisses ever and I’ve watched this movie a million times just for the sweet romantic scenes and have never gotten tired of it. That aside, the movie is more silly and cheesy than typical rom coms but I find that endearing about this classic lesbian movie. Plus, Jordana Brewster is the lead actress and if you liked her from Fast and Furious, then you’re going to think she’s 10x hotter in D.E.B.S.

The movie is about a secret government agent, Amy, who’s part of an elite national-defense group, D.E.B.S., and falls in love with the villain, Lucy (played by Jordana), who she is supposed to take down.

3. Luce and Rachel from Imagine Me and You

This is one of the sweetest lesbian rom coms of all time. It’s about a woman named Rachel (played by Piper Perabo) who is getting ready to marry Hector (‘Heck’), her longtime boyfriend. While working on the wedding preparations, she meets Luce (played by Lena Headey), the wedding’s florist and unexpectedly falls in love with her. She begins to question her sexuality and tries to brush off her feelings only to have them grow stronger for Luce.

In hindsight, I do feel really bad for Heck (Piper’s fiance), but hey, if it’s Lena Headey on the other side, you just can’t say no. While my main critique of this lesbian film is that there weren’t enough romantic scenes between Luce and Rachel, it’s still one of my favorite gay films of all time.

Lesbian Dramas

4. Wil and Vivian from Saving Face

This is one of our all-time favorite lesbian movies. It’s heartwarming, funny, and a tear-jerker all at the same time. If you’ve ever felt like your LGBTQ identity clashed with your cultural identity or immigrant parents, then Saving Face is a lesbian film that you’ll be able to relate to.

It’s about two Asian-Americans who fall in love and have to overcome cultural barriers and taboos to come out to their families while balancing their careers and relationship.

5. Carol and Therese from Carol

I’ve lost count of how many times Chia and I have watched Carol, but it’s a great Oscar-worthy movie. It’s based on the book titled, “ The Price of Salt “ and features Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. I mean, I’d watch any movie featuring those two needless to say a lesbian movie.

The movie is about a young aspiring photographer, Therese (Rooney Mara) who develops an intimate relationship with a beautiful older woman, Carol (Cate Blanchett) in 1950s New York. As their bond deepens, things become more complicated when Carol decides to leave her husband and risk custody of her child.

6. Esti and Ronit from Disobedience

There’s no doubt that Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams are both incredibly talented actresses. I remember first falling in love with Rachel McAdams when she starred in The Notebook (a very straight, but cute romantic drama) and wished that I was Ryan Gosling. But after 13 years of waiting, I finally get to see Rachel McAdams star in a lesbian drama! Not only is pairing these two together a dream for lesbians everywhere but we get to watch these two be at their best in Disobedience. The difficult themes of the movie as well as the steamy romance (not to mention the sexy sex scene), and cinematography were top notch.

The movie is based on the novel with the same name about a woman who returns to the Orthodox Jewish community that shunned her decades earlier for an attraction to a female childhood friend. Once back, the attraction between the two women and their passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.

7. Gia and Linda from Gia

While the real life story of supermodel Gia Carangi (played by Angelina Jolie) is certainly tragic, this biographical drama does a good job of portraying that as well as the relationship between Gia and her girlfriend, Linda. Their passionate relationship is one of the hottest ships to be featured in a movie. This film is definitely not for the fainthearted.

Historical Period Dramas

8. Marianne and Héloïse from Portrait of a Lady on Fire

This was a well made movie and a fan favorite among many lesbians, but be aware that it’s not the typical happy ending that you’d expect. Nonetheless, the buildup of the romantic relationship between the two was stellar and one of the things that I enjoy about period dramas is that there’s often a lot of nuance between the two women who fall in love with each other.

  • Does it have a happy ending? Kinda, but they don’t end up together. ☁️

9. Vita and Virginia from Vita & Virginia

Based on the true story between writer Virginia Woolf and fellow author Vita Sackville-West. The two meet in London in the 1920s and despite both of them being married, they embark on an affair that later inspires one of Virginia’s novels. While I enjoy period dramas and movies inspired by true stories and I thought this movie was well done in terms of cinematography and acting, at times, it did fall a little flat in terms of their character development. Nonetheless, their lesbianship is still one of the better ones out there.

10. Mary and Charlotte from Ammonite

Ammonite is a historical drama loosely based on acclaimed paleontologist Mary Anning’s life and work. While selling fossils, a visitor hires her to care for his wife, Charlotte. The two women embark on a romantic journey that will change the both of their lives.

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan play their roles as lesbian love interests with each other very well in this film. The passionate love scenes between the two will make you go “Whoah…” This movie does take some creative liberties with the historical facts of Mary Anning’s life (i.e. she wasn’t a lesbian in real life), but this list is about the hottest lesbian couples ever shipped together in a movie, and Kate and Saoirse definitely fit the bill.

11. Colette and Georgie from Colette

Inspired by the real life story of French novelist Colette (played by Keira Knightley). I found thing movie to be both inspiring and well-made. Keira Knightley plays characters in historical dramas so well. While her character has two lesbian romances in the film, I did wish that her relationship with Georgie would’ve lasted, but I’m happy that she still ended up with a woman at the end. Now if only they could recreate Pirates of the Caribbean with Keira Knightley and include a lesbian ship.

12. Jean and Lydia from Tell It to the Bees

While I had high hopes for this movie only to be disappointed at the end, I will say that the romance and relationship between the two main characters, Jean and Lydia were well developed.

This movie is based in 1952 and centers around Dr. Jean Markham who returns to her Scottish hometown to take over her late father’s medical practice. She soon becomes ostracized by the community when she begins a passionate romance with a woman who has a young son.

The movie has a bittersweet ending that’s different from the novel. If you’re interested in the actual book titled, Tell it to the Bees, that this movie is based off of, you can check that out here.

13. Alice and Vera from Summerland

This lesbian movie is on par with some of the highest quality production films we’ve seen and I love the originality of the storyline.

It’s about a reclusive writer, Alice, who has her life upended when a young boy, Frank, an evacuee from the London Blitz during WWII, is left in her care. Despite initially resolving to be rid of him, Alice finds herself and her emotions of a past lesbian romance reawakened by him.

Even though most of the movie was focused on the non lesbian relationship aspects, you still get very meaningful glimpses and moments of the lesbian relationship that leave your heart melting.

Holiday Rom Coms

14. Harper and Abby from Happiest Season

Happiest Season has quickly become one of my top lesbian holiday movies of all time. This movie has so many great things going-Kristen Stewart, a heartwarming coming out story, Christmas, and a touching happy ending. There were so many sweet lesbian moments between Harper (played by Mackenzie Davis) and Abby (played by Kristen Stewart). I remember first watching Kristen Stewart in Twilight and having an inkling that she just might be gay… and what do you know?! She’s now a lesbian goddess.

If you’ve already watched the movie…are you Team Harper or Team Riley?

15. Lauren and Hailey from Lez Bomb

I loved this movie had the perfect balance of what you’d want from a holiday rom com. It’s about a closeted woman who plans on coming out to her family during Thanksgiving and brings her girlfriend home but has all of her coming-out efforts thwarted by the unexpected arrival of her male roommate and crazy family drama.

While I ultimately loved the film more than Chia did, we both agreed that this was an endearing lesbian movie that was ridiculous and corny while at the same time being heartwarming and relatable. We both loved the lesbian ship between Lauren and Hailey and thought they were very cute together.

16. Sue and Janey from Season of Love

Ever since watching Wynonna Earp, I can’t get enough of Dominique Provost-Chalkley who plays Waverly Earp and is in one of the hottest TV lesbianships of all time with Nicole Haught (#wayhaught).

Luckily, Dominique also stars in this holiday movie, Season of Love, that’s like the lesbian version of Love Actually. Dominique plays the character, Sue, who’s in a lesbian relationship with Janey and they are adorable together. The film follows the lives of three very different lesbian couples in dealing with their love lives during Christmas.

Foreign Films

17. Mia and Frida from Kiss Mig (Kiss Me)

This was one of the first foreign lesbian films we’d ever watched and the lesbian romance did not disappoint. The buildup between the two main characters, Mia and Frida, were well done and the romantic chemistry between the two was undeniable. While we did not condone certain actions of the main characters, you really can’t help but root for Mia and Frida to be together at the end.

The movie is about a young woman, Mia, who is engaged but finds herself falling in love with her soon-to-be stepmother’s lesbian daughter.

18. Lucia and Mariana from La Luciérnaga (The Firefly)

La Luciérnaga is another win for foreign lesbian movies. I was initially a little hesitant about the storyline of this movie, but became pleasantly surprised as I watched it. It’s a touching story that’s beautifully told. Both leading ladies are attractive and have believable chemistry on screen.

The storyline is about these two women who fall in love with one another after bonding over the death of their brother/fiance who happen to be the same man.

19. Adèle and Emma from Blue is the Warmest Color

Blue is the Warmest Color was one of the first foreign lesbian films I watched and at the time, I thought that it was very artistic and depicted the nuances of coming to terms with your sexuality, growing up, and falling in and out of love with your first love really well. But the ending is rather heartbreaking.

In terms of the lesbian romance in the film, let’s just say that, right when you think that the sex scene is over, it continues for another 10 minutes…

20. Alba and Natasha from Room in Rome

This had to make our list of hottest lesbian couples ever shipped together in a lesbian movie. The entire plot of the movie is about two attractive women who go to a hotel room together and basically have sex for the entire day and a happy ending is implied. What more could you ask for?

Indie Lesbian Films

21. Andie and Lu from The Feels

While the premise of this movie was a bit lame, I still enjoyed watching Andi (played by Constance Wu) and Lu together on screen in this indie movie as an engaged lesbian couple. They were a cute couple together and thankfully, the movie has a happy ending.

22. Jasmine and Dallas from Below Her Mouth

While this movie doesn’t come close to being in our top lesbian movies list, the one redeeming part of it is the hot romance between the two female characters. The storyline centers around Jasmine, a successful fashion editor living with her fiance who during a night out in the city meets Dallas, a roofer who’s recently out of a relationship. The two women embark on a steamy affair that forces them both to re-evaluate their lives.

23. Rebecca and Paris from A Perfect Ending

The plot of this movie is based on a repressed wife, Mason, who unsatisfied with her marriage and after discovering that she has a terminal illness is prompted by her lesbian friends to explore her sexuality with a high-priced call girl.

Don’t go into this movie expecting something high quality because the acting and dialogue can be a bit cringy at times, but with that said, watch this movie if you’re just looking for a romantic lesbian relationship between two attractive women.

Honorable Mentions (Not a True Lesbian Storyline)

24. Rita and Betty from Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive is a thriller about a woman who is left amnesiac after a car crash and takes refuge in an apartment in LA. There she is discovered by Betty (played by Naomi Watts), a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress. Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita’s true identity.

Mulholland Drive is often regarded by critics as one of the greatest films of the 21st century, so if you’re up for a good movie with some lesbian romance but a not so happy ending, then it’s definitely worth a watch!

25. Lorraine and Delphine from Atomic Blonde

Now that we’re in the honorable mentions category, Atomic Blonde has to be included here. This action thriller features one of the shortest lived but incredibly sexy lesbian ships of all time between Lorraine (played by Charlize Theron) and Delphine (played by Sofia Butella). I’m a sucker for anything with Charlize Theron (my first celebrity girl crush) because she’s such a talented actress-compare her Oscar-winning work in Monster with her kick-ass role in Atomic Blonde and you’ll understand why she’s just all-around awesome.

  • Does it have a happy ending? Yes, but they don’t end up together.
  • How steamy are the romantic scenes (out of 5)? 🔥🔥🔥🔥

26. Stephanie and Emily from A Simple Favor

I know it’s not exactly fair to include these two from A Simple Favor on this list because neither characters were explicitly lesbian nor did they have a romantic relationship with each other, but they did share a super hot kiss and it might as well be one of the hottest “lesbian” kisses ever. Blake Lively kissing anyone, let alone Anna Kendrick, is 100% worth watching.

  • Does it have a happy ending? Yes, but they don’t end up together.
  • How steamy are the romantic scenes (out of 5)? 🔥

27. Nina and Lily from Black Swan

Another honorable mention on this list is Nina and Lily from Black Swan. Similar to A Simple Favor, this isn’t quite a lesbian relationship nor is it really a lesbian movie, but Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis do share a sexy romantic scene together (even though they are frenemies). Plus, this movie was nominated for five Oscars, and Natalie Portman won Best Actress for her role so it’s definitely a movie worth watching even if it’s not a lesbian movie.

  • Does it have a happy ending? No and it’s somewhat tragic 😢
  • How steamy are the romantic scenes (out of 5)? 🔥🔥🔥

28. Elizabeth and Olive from Professor Marston & The Wonder Women

Professor Marston & The Wonder Women is a biographical drama film about American psychologist William Moulton Marston, who created the fictional character Wonder Woman and has an unconventional polyamorous relationship with his wife Elizabeth and their mutual lover Olive Byrne.

While the movie does feature more of the romance between Professor Marston and the two women, the romantic relationship between Elizabeth and Olive also feels very real and authentic.
