Product update: SessionStack introduces a new user-centric design for its Session dashboard

We are happy to share with you a brand new Session Dashboard, where we are upgrading the session-centric grid to a user-centric one.

Why are we taking the user-centered approach?

The most important reason why we undertake this user-based approach is that users, not sessions, adopt products, make purchases, or subscribe to services. Focusing only on sessions with successful conversions/drop-offs may significantly distort the whole picture around your product and users. The standard analytics is event-based and this implies collecting all possible data around events. Yet, the user-orientated one is a combination of both methods: classic and user-data-based.

SessionStack in general is tracking all user events in a session such as mouse clicks, page visits, tab changes, window resize, scroll positioning, etc. Furthermore, by adding our user identifier, you can turn your anonymous users into people who are your customers or are entering your onboarding process. With this SessionStack moves a level up from a user-based to a person-based approach which will solve all cross-device analytics problems.

If you don’t use a user identifier, each time the same user logs in from a different device (a desktop, a mobile browser) they will be treated as a newcomer.

Prior to switching from an old session-centric design to a user-centric one, we were still a user-driven analytical tool, but now we’re laying the groundwork for our next steps in product analysis. We’ll spill the beans by revealing our next upcoming feature, which will be Segment charts in our main dashboard.

User-centric dashboard

In general, product managers and UI/UX designers are interested in user journeys whereas developers and user support teams are rather looking to solve problems in particular sessions. With our new user-centric grid we've found a good balance between both use cases. The information for users and their sessions that you are used to seeing is still available, but it is presented in a more concise and helpful format.

Once you open the Session Dashboard, you will see a list of users. Each of them is represented with the most recent available history session in the main grid. By pressing the button “Play“, you can replay and watch their latest session.

All previously recorded sessions of your users can be found in the right-side panel by clicking on the “>“ icon for more details.

How our new Sessions dashboard design will affect you:

  • You’ll no longer need to filter each time for a particular user to list only their sessions.
  • When you apply a search criterion, such as “all users who clicked with a specific HTML element,” the right side panel will display all available sessions. It will add the label “Matching” to those that are relevant for filtering.
  • Furthermore, you can switch between sessions to check the entire user experience without having to remove the previously applied filter.
