As the world becomes more and more digitized, the demand for datacenters increases. In fact, it is estimated that by 2025 the global datacenter market will be worth $250 billion. With this increase in demand comes an increase in energy consumption. In 2018 alone, datacenters consumed 196.9 billion kWh of electricity, which accounted for 1.08% of total global electricity consumption.

Fortunately, there are a number of initiatives underway to make datacenters more energy-efficient. One such initiative is the use of green energy. Green energy is defined as renewable energy that comes from natural sources such as the sun, wind, and water. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of green energy for datacenters.

Reduced Environmental Impact

One of the most important benefits of green energy is that it reduces the environmental impact of datacenters. Datacenters have a large carbon footprint due to their high electricity consumption. In fact, it is estimated that the ICT sector accounts for 2–3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

By using green energy, datacenters can significantly reduce their carbon footprint. For example, a study by Microsoft found that its use of green energy at its Dublin datacenter reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 30%. Furthermore, by using green energy, datacenters can help to offset their emissions from other sources.

Improved Sustainability

Another benefit of green energy is that it improves the sustainability of datacenters. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for businesses as consumers become more conscious of the environmental impact of the products and services they purchase. In fact, according to a study by Nielsen, 66% of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable products and services.

As mentioned above, green energy reduces the environmental impact of datacenters. Furthermore, it also helps to improve the efficiency of datacenters. For example, Google has found that its use of green energy has helped to improve the efficiency of its data centers by 15%. This improved efficiency results in lower operating costs and increased profits.

Sesterce & Green Energy

At Sesterce we use green energy by design out of conviction but also for economic reasons since most of the energy we use is green energy. This allows us to have energy at a substantial price.

Furthermore, in order to maximize our infrastructure, we like to reuse the heat produced by the datacenters to heat the local infrastructure. From energy sourcing to datacenter waste we optimize the entire value chain.

Conclusion

There are a number of reasons why businesses should consider using green energy for their datacenters. Green energy reduces the environmental impact of datacenters and improves their sustainability. Additionally, it helps to improve the efficiency of datacenters, which leads to lower operating costs and increased profits. As consumers become more conscious of the environmental impact of the products and services they purchase, businesses that use green energy will be well-positioned to capitalize on this trend.
