Welcome to the Set Social Trader Spotlight Series. In these posts, we’ll give you an insight into our launch traders that’ll be on the Set Social Trading platform once it goes live. Learn more about Social Trading here.

Today, we’ve got an interview with Vangelis (Sanz Prophet) for all of you to enjoy.

Hi Vangelis, nice to have you. Can you give an intro about yourself?

I have been a trader for 12 years and started trading crypto in early 2017. I am a partner at a firm that researches and develops investment models for traditional markets.

I lived through the Greek financial crisis, so I have a first hand understanding for the need for cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance.

I also manage a blog and you can read my latest piece here.

You mentioned you have 12 years of trading experience across traditional and crypto markets. What parallels and differences do you see trading stocks versus trading crypto?

The main difference becomes evident when attempting to categorize Bitcoin: Bitcoin is a safe-haven asset, it is inflation resistant and exhibits upside risk. This is very rare and makes it a great addition to traditional portfolios. In other words, if problems arise in the world, Bitcoin is a good asset to hold. But unlike gold, it is mobile and has a non-correlated custodial risk to the markets (i.e. if banks fail, so will your gold custodian, but not your Bitcoin).

That said, both markets are populated by people so they both move according to psychology. Both have their bull and bear market cycles and both exaggerate moves on both sides. The thinking process of analyzing price movements is similar and behaves like running stops, margin liquidation points, and large trader manipulation happens in both markets.

What crypto assets do you trade in your strategies?

I trade BTC, USDC, and sometimes ETH. I am also very fond of interest-bearing protocols like Compound.

Can you explain your strategy that you’re going to execute on the Set Social Trader?

The Bull Bear Bitcoin Strategy is a ‘core’ strategy that can be used as a Bitcoin Buy & Hold replacement. It can be combined with other more active or specialized strategies. It holds Bitcoin during bull markets but exits to interest-bearing cash when it detects a weak or side-ways market.

The motivation for this strategy comes from a personal need: To park savings in cash, earn interest while having someone keeping an eye on the Bitcoin market in case we are at the start of those 300%+ moves.

The strategy uses strict rules and has been tested extensively. It is a ‘low-complexity’ strategy, meaning the rules are simple and less prone to over-fitting. You can read the full description of the strategy here.

What was your most memorable moment in trading (crypto or traditional markets)

In my first year of trading (2008–2009) I bought Apple at $89. In today’s terms (before multiple splits) that would be around $14.

What is something that people don’t know about you that you’d like to share?

I am a dad and own a French bulldog.

What excites you most about social trading?

Trading can isolate you from people. Social trading brings back the interaction and exchange of ideas. Of course, one should be careful not to blindly follow the crowd, have their own mind and do their own research.

Anything else you’d like to tell us or your potential followers?

To the Set team: Non-custodial, rules based portfolios are a dream! Congratulations and keep up the good work.

To potential followers: I did sell Apple for $91 (~$14.5) a few days later. That taught me a lesson, namely to follow rules and research how markets behave.

Conclusion
