I was coffee

I was coffee
and
you were tea

and I never learned
how to read
the leaves

and I never could
finish a cup
of your special brew.

But still I
fell
into a haze.

And
I forgot
the only tea
that ever healed me
was Manzanilla
brewed for me
specially
by my mother.

I used to sip it
before I went to bed
getting ready
to fall
into a dream.

And sipping tea
with you
was hazy
dream land

until you
shook me

in your bed
reminded me
that you never
really wanted coffee
in the first place.
