I’m not waiting for you to get back to me

A couple of year ago, I was contacted by an agency on behalf of a major electronics company as part of their blogger outreach program. They initially contacted me to gauge my interest in being one of their “blogger ambassadors” through my then-more-active technology product review blog/YouTube channel. I excitedly responded and spoke to them, they too, seemed keen. They promised a detailed written proposal within the week. After much follow-up/pestering, about 2 weeks after the call I received their proposal.

Between the time of receiving their first email and the proposal, careful not to jeopardise any potential offer with criticism of the company’s products, or comparisons to their competitors, I did not publish reviews (the reviews I had planned were all competitors to the company, or products made by the company itself).

Following receiving the proposal, there was some correspondence back and forth between the agency and I as I tried to clarify details and push for a contract, again, holding off on publishing.

Then it fell quiet. The agency told me that they had met with their client, but were waiting for their confirmation. I followed up a number of times after that, but to no avail.

The alluring multi-thousand dollar ad deal, would-be the first of its kind in my blog, ultimately leading to nothing was a fairly painful lesson for me. Not only did nothing come of the deal, I also missed publishing content that would have contributed to growing the blog in its early stages.

As I came to learn, the deal is not done until the contract is signed.

Sometimes, it won’t eventuate. Irrespective of how big the potential offer is, and how exciting it may be, I’m going to be careful not to put things on hold, and not risk missing other opportunities whilst I wait.
