Last Friday The Economist hosted “Bring in your Parents Day”, as part of the annual initiative by LinkedIn. Parents of Economist Group employees were invited to see how and where we work.

We’ll be bidding farewell to our home in St James’s next year when we move to a new building. So Friday was also a great opportunity for staff to show their parents our incredible views across the London skyline:

The day began with talks from production staff, editors and the social media team. Parents learned how the newspaper is put together and about the process of adapting it for digital channels. After giving them a tour of the building, we asked them what piece of advice they would give someone embarking on their career.

Some advice offered parental practicality; other tips were about confidence and self-belief. One of our favourites, “Listen to your mother”, is really just a sage mantra for life!

We thought we’d share a few of their words of experience with you. As ever, your comments are welcome.
