When you’re in a long-distance relationship, or a flirtation with someone, sexting can be a welcome way of tiding your lust over during the time you’re apart from the object of your desire. This can be a positive, erotic experience that brings two people closer together.

On the other hand, just about anyone who has ever been on the Internet can attest to receiving unsolicited nudes at some point, with the sender probably thinking that the mere sight of their genitals will get you so hot and bothered that you’ll pursue something with them. In most cases, that’s probably not the outcome, but how do people really feel when they get roped into sexting they didn’t ask for?

Like most things related to sex and relationships, it depends on the individual.

In a study published in The Journal of Sex Research, Alexa Marcotte and Amanda Gesselman surveyed 2,045 women and 298 gay and bisexual men about their experiences and feelings on receiving unsolicited nudes. They found that 80 percent of men and 50 percent of women who participated had received genital images from someone and in 91 percent of those cases, these sexts were unsolicited.
