The Real Reasons Older Couples Are Having Less Sex

One of my favorite sayings is, “just because there’s snow on the roof doesn’t mean there’s no fire in the furnace.” I don’t even remember where I first heard that quote, but it always struck me as funny and it stuck with me — long before there was any snow on my proverbial roof.

Not only is this saying humorous, it also holds true: Although many people think that the fire in the furnace gets completely extinguished with age, that’s not necessarily the case. According to a survey of people 50 years old and above, 35 percent said that not only is there fire in the furnace, it is burning hotter than ever because their sex drive is the highest it’s ever been. Also, 45 percent of the 2,000 respondents say they’re having the best sex of their lives, and one in eight say they’re having sex at least five times every week.

However, some couples aren’t so lucky. The survey, which was sponsored by LELO, found that about one-third of participants would like to be more intimate with their partners, but oftentimes there is something getting in the way. Usually the culprit is a busy work schedule (42 percent), but also people cited living with others (39 percent) and getting frequent visits from family members (36 percent) as reasons for not being able to connect…
