In the current day and age, coming across terms like monogamy, polygamy, and polyamory is not new.

But let’s distinguish them again.

  • Monogamy is: having a sexual and emotional relationship with one person at a time.
  • Polygamy is: being married to multiple partners at a time.
  • Polyamory is: having sexual and emotional relationships with more than one person at a time.

Sounds pretty clear, right?

However, the way these relationships play out may not be as ‘clear’.

Take a friend of mine, Robert, for example. He is now dating a girl who identifies as polyamorous. He, on the contrary, has always dated one person at a time.

Being in a ‘poly-mono relationship’ is something unfamiliar. And while he was quite uncomfortable with the idea of his new girlfriend dating other people, he still decided to date her and set some boundaries at the beginning of the relationship.

Robert was okay with her dating women, as long as he was the only man she would date.
