There are countless myths about porn. One myth that’s commonly believed is that it’s “addictive” like a drug. People talk about so-called “porn addiction” all the time. But, research shows it’s not a real thing.

It wasn’t included in the DSM-V, the manual for diagnosing mental health conditions. That means that it can’t be treated by any serious medical professional.

Separating fact from fiction can be tough in a world where disinformation is rampant. And much of what you find online about porn-viewing habits and its potential health effects is just that—disinformation.

It’s so widespread that we constantly get submissions here at Sexography talking about the nefarious porn addiction (we don’t accept them), even though porn addiction is more myth than reality.

But we’re fighting back.

UCLA neuroscientist, Dr. Nicole Prause, Ph.D., and I had a long interview where we covered everything, from the history of the myths surrounding porn addiction to what the science says.

Check out our discussion on the subject on The Science of Sex on Substack here.
