We live in a time of sexual freedom and exploration. No one blinks an eye at premarital sex anymore. Just yesterday, a friend boasted of having the time of her life at an orgy, and we all gave her a high five.

Many people credit contraceptive technologies and family planning services for our open-minded approach to sex. But scientific data shows that Penicillin’s role in shaping modern sexuality was pivotal.

In the early 1900s, engaging in sex was a threat to life, apart from possible complications during childbirth. The fear of contracting a sexually transmitted disease(STD) loomed large. With no means of prevention and no cure in sight, an STD was a cruel death sentence.

Remember the gory STD images shown to us back in school? Burnt into my memory is the image of a healthy penis, and alongside it an infected penis covered in cauliflower-like growths. Imagine that ravaging through your body… now that’s hell on earth.
